Red Flags to Watch for When Dating Online

Published on April 14, 2026

Online dating can be wonderful, but it's important to stay alert for warning signs. Scammers, catfishers, and emotionally manipulative people exist on every platform. Knowing the red flags helps you protect yourself and focus on genuine connections.

Common Red Flags

1. They Refuse Video Calls

In today's world, there's no excuse for consistently avoiding video chat. They may claim their camera is broken, they're "not ready," or they have a "busy schedule." While some shyness is understandable, repeated refusal to video call after multiple requests suggests they're hiding something – perhaps a different appearance, marital status, or identity.

2. Too Good to Be True

If their profile seems perfect – model-level photos, lavish lifestyle, extraordinary stories – proceed with caution. Scammers often use stolen photos and fabricated biographies. Reverse-image search their photos if you're suspicious.

3. Rapid Escalation of Affection

Love bombing is a manipulation tactic where someone declares strong feelings very quickly (e.g., "I love you" within days). This is not normal; it's a red flag for potential emotional abuse or scam. Genuine connections develop gradually.

4. They Ask for Money or Gifts

No legitimate romantic interest will ask you for money, gifts, or financial assistance. Common stories: emergency medical bills, travel expenses to "visit you," business investments, or family crises. If money comes up, cut contact immediately.

5. Inconsistent Stories

Pay attention to details. If they tell different versions of their job, location, or relationship history, they may be lying. A trustworthy person's story remains consistent over time.

6. Pressure to Move Off-Platform

Scammers often try to move conversations to WhatsApp, Telegram, or other platforms quickly – to avoid detection and reporting on the original platform. Be cautious if they push to leave the site before you've built trust.

7. Asking for Intimate Photos

Requesting nude or suggestive photos early on is a major red flag. Those images can be used for blackmail ("sextortion") or shared without consent. Never send intimate pictures to someone you haven't met in person and fully trust.

8. Poor Grammar and Evasive Answers

While not always indicative, many scammers operate from overseas and use scripted responses. They may avoid answering direct questions, give vague answers, or have unusually poor English for someone claiming to be from an English-speaking country.

9. They're Always Traveling or Abroad

"I'm working overseas for a few months" is a common scammer storyline. They'll eventually claim they're stuck in a foreign country and need money to return. Be skeptical of profiles where the person claims to be temporarily located far away.

10. They Disappear and Reappear Frequently

Inconsistent availability, disappearing for days without explanation, then reappearing as if nothing happened, can indicate they're juggling multiple victims or have a secret life.

What to Do If You Spot Red Flags

  • Trust your gut: If something feels off, it probably is.
  • Stop engaging: You don't owe anyone an explanation. Block and move on.
  • Report them: Use the platform's report function. Provide details to help moderators.
  • Never send money: Even if the story sounds heartbreaking.
  • Reverse image search: Use Google Images or TinEye to check if profile photos are stolen.
  • Talk to friends: Sometimes an outside perspective can spot what you're missing.

When It's Not a Scam – Just a Bad Match

Not every red flag means someone is a criminal. Some people are simply awkward, socially inexperienced, or have different communication styles. Use your judgment. If they're just not clicking with you, that's okay – block and move on. But if they're demanding money, threatening, or behaving predatorily, report immediately.
